Your safety is non-negotiable. While we want to be open to love, we also need to be smart about protecting ourselves. Here are essential safety practices for modern dating.
Before the First Date
- 1Do a basic background check. Google their name, check social media, look for consistency in their story.
- 2Video call before meeting in person. This confirms they are who they say they are.
- 3Tell a friend where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to be home.
- 4Share your live location with a trusted person for the duration of the date.
- 5Never share your home address or workplace before you have established trust.
During the Date
1. Meet in a public place.
Coffee shops, restaurants, busy parks. Never at their home or yours for the first few dates.
2. Arrange your own transport.
Do not let him pick you up until you know him well. Have your own way home.
3. Watch your drink.
Never leave it unattended. If you do, order a new one.
4. Trust your instincts.
If something feels off, it probably is. You do not owe anyone an explanation for leaving.
5. Have an exit strategy.
Keep your phone charged, have a friend on standby, know where the exits are.
Red Flags to Watch For
- !Pressuring you to meet before you are ready
- !Getting angry when you set boundaries
- !Refusing to share basic information about themselves
- !Love bombing, excessive flattery and grand gestures too soon
- !Inconsistent stories or details that do not add up
"Your safety and comfort are more important than being polite. A good man will respect your boundaries. Anyone who does not is showing you who they are."
